Koolfi Creamery
“Research shows” is the favorite line of the Chief Ice Cream Engineer Priti Narayanan at Koolfi Creamery. And research does show that Indian dishes, on average, contain at least seven ingredients that carry complex flavors, textures, and aromas. Indian ice creams are no different with spices, nuts, crunch, and layers of different textures, and fragrance that miraculously work to wow you. We, at our small batch Bay Area creamery, want to share the joy of these authentic flavors with you.
While we love our roots, we also do more than just Indian! Our flavors are inspired by our love for nature, travel and by our multiracial backgrounds (Indian-German-American).
The ice cream is locally made in the East Bay, using only organic animal-based ingredients (dairy, milk and eggs), and organic coconut milk for the vegan treats. We partner with Bay Area producers for fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, and use high quality imports like Indian Alphonso Mangoes for others.
The environment is very important to us, and we only use recyclable or compostable utensils. We envision extending our personal commitment to social justice work, through involvement in non-profits for education and LGBTQ rights, to our business decisions as we grow.
The good, bad, and the ugly – we want to hear from you! Tell us at [email protected] if you tasted a new flavor somewhere that was da bomb. Tell us if you liked meeting us as much as we did you. Tell us how to improve our service. We are listening!
Priti & Mads, Ice Cream Engineers
Priti is a city girl raised all over India, with roots in the Indian cities of Bombay and Chennai. Her love for food started early when, perched on a kitchen counter in her diapers, she would watch her Amma (mom) and Appa (dad) make breakfast in a small cottage in the foothills of the Himalayas. Dessert is a family passion, especially the Indian Ice Cream, Kulfi with its sublime slow cooked milk, spices, saffron, and nuts.
Priti moved to the US to pursue her Masters in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and followed that with a successful career in Transportation Planning on both coasts. But her heart wanted more. She, along with her wife, were hit by a bus while crossing a street in San Francisco, one evening several years ago. As clichés go, surviving that made her decide to follow her passion for sharing her joy of food. From this passion was born Koolfi Creamery – an ice cream venture to share complex flavors from India, and around the world, made with high quality, organic animal products, and fresh fruits from local farms.
Mads’ fascination with food from around the world started early in her biracial home. Her mom was famous for her Indo-German version of Goulash which she made her own with the addition of ginger, garlic and green chilies; and for her Indian takes on those famous German cakes like Mango Tortes and Cashew “kuchen”. Mads finished hotel school on the French-German border along the Rhine, and followed that with an undergraduate degree in San Francisco in Hotel Management.
Mads is a killer kebab maker, cooking up sizzling delicacies in her backyard Tandoor, and pairing those with some good German and Czech beers. She is an avid foodie, loves to travel, and loves her dual roles of chief taster, and business administrator.
For over 25 years, Mads has remained deeply committed to LGBTQ advocacy work. She and Priti had the privilege of being invited to the White House (under the Obama administration) for her work as a Queer Leader. So needless to say, she likes to think of those days when she had her gin and tonic at the White House, and is humbled to have met President Obama and Vice-President Biden. She plans to continue to support this and other causes through the business.
Now enough about us! We would love to hear from you. Hello us below!
